  • Performed by attempting to forcibly exhale while keeping the mouth and nose closed. The maneuver is used as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the condition of the heart; it's also sometimes used as a treatment to correct abnormal heart rhythms or to relieve chest pain. The idea is that the action causes specific changes in blood pressure, the rate of blood returning to the heart, and the volume of blood returning to the heart.
